Back-to-Back-to-Back Men's & Women's NCAA Champions (2011, 2010, 2009);
6x NCAA Champs; Henry has won 33 NCAA titles in his coaching career - ranking him third all time in NCAA titles won; U.S. Men's National Team Head Coach at the 2007 World Championships (record 10 Gold Medals).
Teach your athletes specific drills that will improve their sprint mechanics, acceleration and maximum velocity -- and lower their sprint times!
Though practice footage with athletes at Texas A&M, Head Coach Pat Henry takes a coach step by step through many of the drills that produced his successful sprinters and relay teams.
With sprinting, Henry goes through three distinct areas of successful sprinting: the proper block start, the keys to acceleration, and maintaining top end speed throughout the race. Henry takes the viewer through each step in the process he uses to teach the correct way for an athlete to best use the blocks. Henry uses various drills to teach proper foot placement, the correct shin angles at the set position, and foot contacts out of the blocks.
In teaching acceleration, Henry shows the viewer the various drills and cues used to achieve the best drive phase for a sprinter. With top end speed work, Henry goes through his wicket drill that he uses with all his male and female athletes at Texas A&M. The wicket drill provides a process for a sprinter to learn the proper stride rate and frequency through the top end speed phase of the race.
In the relays, Henry explains the process he uses to set up a successful 4x100m relay. Henry provides the viewer the proper place to start for each exchange, how to best accelerate through the exchange zone, and how to handle the baton between each runner.
This video will help you get the very best times out of your sprinters and relays. 64 minutes. 2012.
TD-03993B: with Vince Anderson,
Texas A&M University Assistant Track Coach;
Back-to-Back-to-Back Men's & Women's NCAA Champions (2011, 2010, 2009)
Develop technically sound and fast hurdlers using the coaching philosophy and drill progressions from the back-to-back-to-back NCAA National Championship staff at Texas A&M.
Vince Anderson stresses the connection between hurdling and sprinting throughout the video. He gives you drills in five major areas related to hurdling and ends with four exercises that will develop the strength and athletic ability needed for hurdling.
You don't need to master a ton of drills and techniques to improve your hurdling. Coach Anderson will show you how to use fewer drills and get better results. Using this refined approach and training an equal number of speed days, your hurdlers will see faster times--and you will produce an overall better conditioned athlete.
Speed and coordination are equally essential in the development of the 'sprint' hurdler. Anderson trains his hurdlers as sprinters versus training them as hurdlers who do some sprint work.
Through these drills, Coach Anderson will show you how to:
- Move hurdlers from 4 steps to 3 steps between hurdles
- Develop speed between hurdles
- Break down the phases of the trail leg and increase acceleration after the hurdle
- Develop overall athletic ability - a key to hurdling
Coach Anderson explains how the athletes will develop in the drill areas, throughout the season, and passes along modifications you can make in order to assist development. These modifications will assist coaches at different levels in effectively using the drills. Anderson inserts coaching points throughout the video to supplement the demonstrations by both a male and female collegiate hurdler. He also shares how you can adapt the drills to your athletes' level!
Packed full of useful skills and drills, this video will help all level of athletes and coaches improve not only their speed, but there hurdle technique as well. Whether you are a developmental, collegiate, or sub-elite athlete, the skills and techniques shown in this video will help make you not only faster, but technically proficient as well.

Cultivate the knowledge necessary to achieve your personal best in the high jump!
Texas A&M jumps coach Jim VanHootegem presents a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals, mechanics, skills and drills involved in optimizing a mechanically sound high jump. These are the same drills and progressions that Texas A&M used to win back-to-back-to-back men's and women's NCAA outdoor championships.
Using practice footage, Coach VanHootegem delivers a solid, high jump fundamentals base from which any athlete can benefit. Each aspect of the high jump is explained along with drills to aid in teaching each key point in the event. Among the topics covered are the crossover squat walk, circle runs, figure eights, transitioning from the straight line to a curve, the 10-step approach, curve initiation, the scissor jump, run-throughs and hurdle drills.
You will learn how to initiate and execute the approach from start to takeoff. Special attention is given to initiating the curved portion of the approach through to the takeoff. Proper ground mechanics are covered in-depth as they are critical to set up the correct takeoff and flight actions. VanHootegem demonstrates several drills that can be used to perfect this critical component of the high jump. Scissor jumps, as well as traditional flop jumps, are also included.
Multi-jump activities are taught thoroughly covering what the athlete should feel prior to contacting the ground and during impact. When executed correctly, the leg will function like a spring and impact forces will be distributed evenly through the hip, knee, and ankle.
Throughout the video VanHootegem suggests real-time technical corrections after the jumper's attempts. This feedback will provide you with word cues and things to look for in your jumpers. He also provides a tip to be used in competition that will allow your jumper to get some run-throughs regardless of the bar height during warm-ups.
This DVD, which is designed for both coaches and athletes at all competitive levels, demonstrates how coaches can train their athletes to maximize their performance.

This is your complete guide to horizontal jumps!
With a focus on speed mechanics and positioning, Jim VanHootegem teaches and demonstrates the drills he uses to develop championship-caliber jumpers.
Following an introductory warm-up phase, Coach VanHootegem focuses on sprint mechanics drills. These drills are used as a teaching tool to train your athletes to achieve a consistent tempo or rhythm during during the approach run. These drills train essential muscle groups to work together in concert.
With the approach run are broken down into sections, VanHootegem provides tips on how to get an accurate approach distance for your athletes. He includes the wall drill as a progression in teaching the athlete how to transition from pure acceleration mechanics to a near max-velocity position during the approach.
Takeoff progressions are delivered moving from slow walking to skipping to running drills. The emphasis throughout the drills is on achieving high hips and the feet low to the ground-low heel recovery with the swing or drive leg. Also emphasized is the actions of the feet in both landings and takeoffs.
VanHootegem uses low hurdles to instill a sense of rhythm in the jumper and to achieve multiple repeated takeoffs and landings. He demonstrates the importance of the takeoff leg/foot in achieving a big split and ensuring complete extension of the takeoff action. Finishing out the video he demonstrates some bounding and positioning drills he uses to enforce good landings between phases and to improve strength.
A multi-jumps section progression moves from double leg and simple to single leg, more complex and more specific to the demands of the events. Some static and dynamic jumps are used both alone and together. In the standing triple jump progression the emphasis moves from a vertical action to a more horizontal action covering increasingly greater distances. A progression of bounds is shown moving from baby bounds to longer bounds and also scissors or straight leg bounds.
