with Tim Cawley, University of Idaho Director of Track & Field and Cross Country;
Assistant Coach for Team USA at the 2014 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Championships;
former Colorado State University Long Jump and Triple Jump Coach

Tim Cawley shares more than 50 drills designed to develop championship long/triple jumpers. Using on-track demonstration, Coach Cawley gives the how's and why's of horizontal jumps training. He focuses on the technical aspects of teaching the approach, how to work acceleration and top speed mechanics, how to cover plyometric drills and how to execute long and triple jumps.

Coach Cawley's athletes demonstrate easy-to-follow drills that any jumper can use. These drills, which cover every aspect of the jumps, offer a guide to becoming a championship jumper. Beginning with the approach and the common elements in the long and triple jumps, Coach Cawley demonstrates how to use warm-up drills to teach proper running and jumping form.

Moving on to top speed mechanics, Coach Cawley emphasizes the need for "triple extension" to maximize the athletes' biomechanics in their approach. With his transition and stabilizing drills, Coach Cawley demonstrates the elements of an explosive takeoff. He explains how to properly teach all phases of the long jump, including the landing, and how to use the athlete's natural reactions and tendencies to put them in proper position for the approach takeoff and landing.

Coach Cawley also discusses how to coach the triple jump, covering both the similarities and differences between it and the long jump. He uses 15 different drills to train the mechanics needed to be successful in each phase of the triple jump. Although this progression is a great way to build beginning jumpers, it can also be used to reinforce good habits in veteran triple jumpers. Coach Cawley's video is an excellent resource for beginning and veteran coaches of the long and triple jump. His commonsense approach keeps practice lively and fun, and his teaching technique is clear with great coaching points. Athletes and coaches alike will be given an outline for improving their horizontal jumping skills.
